Balgos, Benigno C.

Benigno C. Balgos brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise in the fields of disaster risk reduction, urbanization and informal settlements, and public policy amassed from nearly 10 years of development work. He finished his MA in Development Policy at the De La Salle University. For his graduate thesis, he was a recipient of the University of British Columbia Thesis Grant under the Urbanising Watershed Project supported by the Social Sciences and Humanitarian Research Council of Canada. Ninoy received his BS in Community Development degree, cum laude, at the University of the Philippines Diliman Campus. His most recent stint was as Head of the Research, Knowledge Exchange and Management unit of the Center for Disaster Preparedness and as faculty member of the University of the Philippines Diliman Campus. Research is also a strong area of expertise of Ninoy, having been involved in research projects with various UN agencies and international organizations, and having published articles in academic journals and book chapters on disaster risk reduction (DRR), gender and disasters, urbanization particularly on Indonesia and the Philippines. Ninoy has also been a recipient of research grants of various organisations such as the Asian Public Intellectuals of The Nippon Foundation, Climate and Disaster Bursary Grant of the Institute of Development Studies – University of Sussex, and the Asian Graduate Student Fellowship of the Asia Research Institute – National University of Singapore. Ninoy speaks Bahasa Indonesia fluently and is interested is comparative perspective on disaster risk reduction between Philippines and Indonesia.
