3 AGS boys help ‘Manila Angels’ win int’l baseball championship

21 Jul 2022

Representing the Philippines, the Manila Angels bested nine other teams and emerged as U10 champion of the Baseball Champions League Summer Classic 2022. Three members of the champion team are from Ateneo de Manila Grade School: Joshua Gonzalez (4-Rajah Matanda in School Year 2021-2022), Aiden Lazaro (3-Banahaw in SY 2021-2022), and Eliam Mojica (4-Humabon in SY 2021-2022). Eliam also received the “Player of the Game” award for the tournament’s third game, Manila Angels vs Banten Lorenz.

According to Ermalyn, Eliam’s mom, the final out in the 4A inning of the fifth and final game of the tournament came courtesy of two Ateneans and the catcher of the Manila Angels. The batter of Flash Bandung (the opposing team) hit the ball so hard that he could have scored a home run. However, Joshua Gonzalez and Eliam Mojica acted quickly. Joshua rushed to the ball, got it, and passed it to Eliam. Eliam then threw the ball from outfield to home base, where the catcher caught it and tagged the hopeful home runner, ending the game at the top of the 4th inning due to mercy rule. The Manila Angels thus emerged triumphant over Flash Bandung, 19-8.

Organized by Prima Baseball Indonesia (PBI), the Baseball Champions League Summer Classic 2022 was held from July 3 to 8, 2022, at Stadion/Sport Centre Kelapa Dua in Tangerang City, Banten, Indonesia.
