The Steering Committee of the Erasmus supported Capacity Building for Legal and Social Advancement in the Philippines (CALESA) project was held last September 19, 2022, at the Nova School of Law located within the campus of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in Lisbon, Portugal. The Ateneo Law School is involved in the CALESA project as one of the founding law school partner institutions together with several other European and Philippine law schools as well as the Philippine Judicial Academy of the Supreme Court of the Republic of the Philippines.
Representing the Ateneo Law School at that Steering Committee meeting were Dean Joey Hofileña and Associate Dean Maita Gonzaga.
On the two days immediately following the CALESA Steering Committee meeting, Universidade Nova de Lisboa hosted a conference entitled “Innovation of University Teaching in a Digital, Multilingual and Globalized Society.”
The Keynote Speech for the conference—"Current developments in the Philippine Judiciary”—was delivered by the Honorable Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo of the Supreme Court of the Republic of the Philippines, also an alumnus of the Ateneo Law School (ALS ’84).
Associate Dean Gonzaga made a presentation on “The Socratic Method in Philippine Legal Education: Impressions and Reflections” and Dean Hofileña spoke on the Ateneo Law School’s pandemic experience in a talk entitled “Ensuring No Interruptions in the Ateneo Law School's Education Mission during the Covid-19 Pandemic.”
Looking ahead, as part of its CALESA commitments, the Ateneo Law School will be hosting a couple of conferences in 2023 on topics centering on human rights and regional integration.
