Miggy Dugan wins gold for PH in Hong Kong Math Olympiad

15 Dec 2022

Four Ateneo de Manila Junior High School mathletes won medal awards for the Philippines at the Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad (HKIMO) Final Round 2022, which was held online on August 28. Leading the awardees was Miggy Dugan (Montserrat/9-Kisai), who won a gold award in the secondary 2 division. Securing silvers were Lance Abarquez (La Storta/10-Gelabert), Gerrico Argonza (La Storta/7-Corby), and Nathan Ballatan (La Storta/8-Dajani), who competed in the secondary 3, primary 6, and secondary 1 age groups, respectively.

AJHS' HKIMO Final Round medalists

The HKIMO Final Round 2022 attracted hundreds of participants from countries such as Australia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. This year’s medalists won a total of 479 golds, 536 silvers, and 502 bronzes across the 10 age groups.

The HKIMO provides a platform for pupils with a strong interest in mathematics, and is open to all students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. It is different from other math Olympiads in that it offers standardized topics such as Logical Thinking, Arithmetic/Algebra, Number Theory, Geometry and Combinatorics. Its goals are to stimulate and foster young people’s interest in learning mathematics, strengthen their creative thinking, and widen their international perspective.
