False Nostalgia: The Marcos Golden Age Myths and How to Debunk Them

February 24, 2023, Friday, 3:00 pm
Auditorium, UP School of Economics, University of the Philippines Diliman
Online via Zoom and Facebook Live

Book launch of False Nostalgia: The Marcos "Golden Age" Myths and How to Debunk Them

False Nostalgia aims to tear down the myriad myths about the Marcoses that have proliferated for decades. Each chapter starts with a common myth or misconception about Marcos Sr.’s martial law and its economic aspects, followed by a quick rebuttal. Using hard facts and data written in accessible language, the book deep dives into various aspects of the Marcosian economy. It gives the economic and political milieu of the time in both context and detail.

Joining the launch is a panel of discussants who are themselves authorities in various fields–historian and academic Maria Serena “Maris” Diokno for a historical perspective, journalist and author Marites Dañguilan Vitug for journalism, and economist and UP professor emeritus Emmanuel S. de Dios for another economic perspective.

The book launch is open to all. Register here.

False Nostalgia: The Marcos Golden Age Myths and How to Debunk Them will be available at the launch and at the Ateneo Press’s online stores on February 24.

eBook Launch

People Power, An Eyewitness History: The Philippine Revolution of 1986 (Digital Edition)

February 27, 2023, Monday, 5:00 pm
Online via Zoom and YouTube Live

Book launch of the digital edition of People Power, An Eyewitness History

The iconic book People Power, An Eyewitness History: The Philippine Revolution of 1986 will be reissued digitally this February.

People Power, An Eyewitness History is a photo book, comprised of statements by participants and observers of the nonviolent 'people power' revolution. Events are shown and described chronologically, beginning with Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino's return to Manila in August 1983, his assassination and funeral (the latter turning into the first major anti-Marcos demonstration), and ending with a photo of Corazon Aquino addressing an ecstatic throng. The 247 pictures collected here, many taken by amateurs, are alternately scary, touching, and inspiring. Included are shots of citizens guarding ballot boxes against government goons, crowds shielding reformist soldiers from loyalist task forces, and people attempting to disarm the Marcos troops with flowers.

Register here to attend the launch.
