AthC Update #4

Today’s updates cover competitions joined by Ateneo de Manila Senior High School athletes from the last week of February until March 14, 2023, and include news about basketball, volleyball, fencing, badminton, table tennis and taekwondo.
We would also like to give recognition to our girls’ volleyball team, boys’ volleyball team, and boys’ football team for their dedication and commitment in representing our school in their respective tournaments.
Boys’ Basketball (UAAP)
The Blue Eagles finished the UAAP Season 85 Junior Boys Basketball Tournament with a 5-9 record - 6th seed- after losing to DLSZ, 59-71, in the game held on March 1 at the FilOil EcoOil Center.
Boys’ Basketball (PRADA)
The Blue Eagles ended their run in the PRADA basketball tournament after losing to Xavier by two points, 57-59, in a nerve-wracking semi-finals game on March 5. The team will again see action in the PAYA basketball tournament, which begins on March 18.
Boys’ Volleyball

Our boys’ volleyball team placed third in the PRADA Volleyball Tournament.
The team has also ended its run in the UAAP Season 85 Juniors Volleyball Championship with a win-loss record of 2-10. Their last match against UE was held on March 14, 2023.
Fencing

Last February 23-26, 2023, the boys and girls of our fencing team received several medals in the UAAP Season 85 Junior Fencing Championships.
In girls' individual foil, Althea Lim (12-Walpole) ranked 8th while Elianna Tutor (12-Evans) ranked 7th. In girls’ team foil, Lim, Tutor, and Patricia Cablay (12-Gonzalez) each received bronze for their third-place finish.
In girls' saber, Patricia Cablay ranked 5th.
In girls' epee, Althea Lim ranked 9th and Elianna Tutor ranked 10th. In the girls’ team epee event, Althea Lim, Elianna Tutor, and Patricia Cablay ranked 5th.
In boys' individual foil, Derek Perez (AJHS 9-Baldinucci) bagged bronze for his 3rd place finish, while Jaime Torres (11-Wright) placed 5th.
In boys’ team foil, Adam Aceron (AJHS 10-Yuki), Faber Cabrera (AJHS 10-Canisius), Derek Perez, and Iñaki Torres (11-Wright) won silvers for their 2nd place finish.
In boys' individual epee, Faber Cabrera placed 3rd and received a bronze medal, while Angelo Delos Santos (11-Perez) placed 7th. In the boys’ team epee event, Faber Cabrera, Angelo Delos Santos, Derek Perez, and Jacob Regala (AJHS 9-Southwell) finished in 3rd place and received bronze medals.
Finally, in boys’ sabre, Toby Cabrera (12-Xavier) received a gold medal for his 1st place finish, while Jarod Clarin (12-Oldcorne) placed 3rd and received bronze. In the boys’ team sabre event, Toby Cabrera, Jarod Clarin, Mairon Moulic (AJHS 9-Berno), and Julian Rosaros (AJHS 9-Lalemant) placed 2nd, receiving silver medals.
Badminton

On March 4, 2023, Ateneo emerged as 2nd runner-up of the PRADA Boys Badminton Tournament, with Xavier as champion and LSGH as 1st runner-up. The competition was held at Xavier School.
The Blue Eagles who played in the tournament are Santi Nilo (12-Evans), Osh Ong (12-Pantalia), Joel Rapa Jr. (12-Beyzym), Jamie Castañeda (AJHS 10-Ferreres), Tyke Arias (11-Perez), and Marcus Asuncion (12-Bobola).
Table Tennis
Last January 28, 2023, the boys and girls of our table tennis team competed in the Athletic Association of Private Schools (AAPS) Table Tennis Meet held in the Blue Eagle Gym.
Frances Lo (11-Angelis) and Maxine Lo (11-Gavan) are champions of the girls’ doubles.
In the singles event, Princess Jaramilla (11-Angelis) finished in 2nd place, while Aoi Reyes (11-Hurtado) finished in 3rd place.
In the boys’ division, Russel Rafanan (11-Angelis) and Chili Fernando (11-Brebeuf) emerged as doubles champions. In the singles category, Dwyane Satur (11-Torres) placed 2nd while Ethan Peña Reyes (11-Grande) placed 3rd.
Both pairs of doubles champions (Lo & Lo, Rafanan & Fernando) will compete in the Quezon City Meet on March 18-19 for the chance to advance and compete in Palarong Pambansa.
Taekwondo

Representing the Philippines, Niko Macasaet (11-Nakaura) earned a silver medal for the kyorugi feather weight division (55kg) in the 16th ASEAN Taekwondo Championships. This was Niko’s first international competition as a member of the Philippine Taekwondo Association Junior Kyorugi National Team.
The event was held from March 10 – 12, 2023, at Ayala Malls Manila Bay.
