Award-winning author Vicente Garcia Groyon releases a collection of essays titled Everything Is Fiction
Latest book by acclaimed author Vicente Garcia Groyon, Everything Is Fiction, is a reflective, personal, and candid collection of essays hovering between fiction and nonfiction. Available this April 26, Everything Is Fiction is published by Bughaw, an imprint of Ateneo de Manila University Press.
These essays are written over a span of 25 years, providing a glimpse into Groyon’s mind, and his relationships with his writing, the works of other writers, and the world at large. Part memoir, part writer’s journal, Everything Is Fiction is a compilation of reflective essays animated by Groyon’s eye for detail, love for storytelling, and commitment to truthfulness.
Groyon’s essays are less about attempting to explain or explore ideas and more about telling stories. Each essay is written out of some necessity and none of them are “pure” essays with “pure” essayistic impulses.

The book is divided into three sections. The first section, “Choosing the Lonely Art,” includes the most autobiographical of these essays, the ones that ruminate on the identity of the “writer” as it applies to the author. The second, “Read the Classics, Boy,” is a set of personal engagements with specific writers and works of literature. The third section, “United States and Other Fictions,” is a trio of essays on the author’s encounters with the United States as a guest of the US government via the International Writers Program at the University of Iowa.
This new collection of essays is an “exercise in starving off oblivion” or an attempt to maintain control of the author’s narrative. In gathering these essays together, Groyon has created a historical document that plots a matrix of his inner life over the years.
Everything Is Fiction by Vicente Garcia Groyon is published by Bughaw, an imprint of the Ateneo de Manila University Press and will be available at unipress.ateneo.edu and the Press’s official Lazada and Shopee stores.
