Representing Quezon City, Ateneo de Manila Grade School chess wizard Marc Fua (6-Pignatelli) & his partner from Bagong Silangan Elementary School emerged as elementary boys division team champions of the DepEd-National Capital Region Palaro Chess Meet 2023. The meet was held at Pinaglabanan Elementary School in San Juan City from April 24-27, 2023, with Fua & partner scoring 11 combined points with 56.5 tiebreaks.
The tournament was played using a Swiss system format, with a time control of one hour plus an increment of 30 seconds per player. Marc lost his first round against his QC teammate but managed to score four straight wins against Pasay City, Manila, Malabon and Parañaque. However, he lost his last two rounds against Taguig/Pateros and Pasig City, respectively, and ended the NCR meet ranking 9th due to tie break.
Marc is the first Ateneo de Manila chess varsity member to represent Quezon City in the NCR Chess Meet during the term of AGS Athletics Coordinator Siegfried Villanueva and Ateneo Chess Program Head Jan Emmanuel Garcia, who is also an International Chess Master.
Marc also recently earned the FIDE Arena Candidate Master (ACM) title as a result of his current rating of 1295. (FIDE is the French acronym "Federation Internationale des Echecs,” whose English translation is “International Chess Federation.”) For a chess player to qualify for the ACM title, he/she must maintain his/her rating at 1100 or higher.
Marc is a member of the AGS chess varsity and is coached by Woman National Master Joann Toledo-Datu.
