OSCI and Volunteers Organized Project SOWimming for Kids
24 May 2023 | Floy Soriano and Noel Nanas
When we think of summer, we think of fun outdoor activities such as swimming! Last May 21, 2023, 15 children from six to 12 years of age were treated to a basic swimming lesson organized by the Office for Social Concern and Involvement together with volunteers from the SOW Reading Sessions. These children took a break from their regular reading tutorials to learn basic swimming techniques such as (1) Proper Entry and Exit from the Swimming Pool, (2) Bubbling, (3) Floating, and (4) and Kicking. The session was facilitated by Coach Carlito Venus, Aquatic Supervisor from the Manila Polo Club. The event was held at the Ateneo Grade School Swimming Pool.

After a three-hour session, they were also treated to a Jollibee chickenjoy and spaghetti meal. They and their guardians went home very satisfied. One of the parents shared in their Facebook group chat that her son proudly narrated to his friends that he learned how to swim and that they received training from Ateneo.
Aside from the lessons learned, each child received swimming tools - kickboards, googles, and swimming caps.

The success of the activity was made possible through the assistance of different offices (the office of the Ateneo Grade School Headmaster, Mr. Jervy Robles, the AGS Facilities and Management Office, the Campus Safety and Mobility Office, and Megaforce) and volunteers who shared their time, talent, and resources to create this once in a lifetime experience for the children from Brgy. Payatas, Quezon City.
