Ateneo makes history as the Philippines’ first Overall Champion at International HSBC/HKU Case Competition
02 Jun 2023

A team of students from Ateneo’s John Gokongwei School of Management (JGSOM) emerged as the Overall Champion of the HSBC/HKU Asia Pacific Case Competition held from 23 May to 1 June 2023, beating 3 other universities in the global Final Round. Ateneo de Manila University is the first Philippine university to win gold in this prestigious global competition.
The team is composed of senior Management (Honors) student Julianne Co, senior BS Management student Louie Angelo Miranda, and BS Management Engineering students Joyce Heidi Ong and Darren Peter Carandang. The team was mentored by coaches James Soriano (BS MGT-H 2012), Gabe Sin (BS ME 2018 & BS Math 2019), and Timi Fandino (BS MGT 2019), and supported by coaches Johnny Filart, Jose Gerardo Cruz, and Michael Tan.

Prior to the win, Ateneo’s best finish was in 2020, when they bagged first runner-up – at the time, also the first for a Philippine university. Ateneo began participating in the HSBC Case Competition in 2013.
Ateneo was joined in the Final Round this year by Belgrade University (Serbia), RMIT University (Vietnam), and City University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong). To make the Final, the team had to qualify by garnering enough points from Round 1 and Round 2, where they out-qualified universities from Australia, Canada, India, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.

Now on its 16th year, the HSBC/HKU Asia Pacific Business Case Competition is an annual event with participants from over 180 universities around the world. It enhances the traditional strengths of the case method of teaching by moving the business case from the classroom into a global competition format. In the competition, students from across the globe are judged by senior executives who make decisions on a daily basis.
