New book Plural Entanglements brings fresh perspectives on Philippine scholarship
Ateneo University Press proudly announces the release of the groundbreaking new book, Plural Entanglements: Philippine Studies. Edited by Dada Docot, Stephen B. Acabado, and Clement C. Camposano, this captivating anthology features essays by emerging Filipino scholars, both based in the Philippines and abroad, generating thought-provoking conversations across diverse Filipino locales.
In a bold departure from the Manila-centric narrative, Plural Entanglements situates Philippine Studies within a global framework, offering multidisciplinary analyses that intertwine history, ethnology, and political anthropology. By amplifying marginalized voices, exploring the Philippines' connections to global events, and challenging outdated theoretical canons, this timely work delves into themes of indigeneity and decolonization.

Tasked with unraveling topics such as indigenous cultures, diasporic communities, postcolonial nation-building, and anti-authoritarian movements, this book invites readers to “reckon with the vexed entanglements of the nation and the native in the face of a long history of racial mixing, ethnic pluralism, and religious differences . . .” to quote Vicente L. Rafael in a review.
Caroline Hau, in her foreword, hails Plural Entanglements as an “exigent” anthology that critically examines inclusions and exclusions within Philippine (trans)national imaginaries and worldmaking. Embracing the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century, the contributors advocate for self-determination as Filipinos and the pursuit of social justice.
This book takes readers on an intellectual journey that redefines Filipino narratives and reimagines the possibilities of global scholarship. Plural Entanglements is indispensable reading for scholars, students, and anyone who seeks inclusive and innovative ways to foster a deeper understanding of the Philippines and its people.
Plural Entanglements: Philippine Studies edited by Dada Docot, Stephen B. Acabado, and Clement C. Camposano is published by Bughaw, an imprint of Ateneo de Manila University Press.
