Inà comes home to the Gesù: Our Lady of Peñafrancia visits Ateneo this month
06 Sep 2023
The pilgrim image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia from the Metropolitan Cathedral of Naga will be visiting the Church of the Gesù at Ateneo de Manila University this September.
Celebrated on the third Saturday of September, the feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia is one of the most important religious and cultural festivals in the Philippines. Prior to the feast, during the Nativity of Mary on September 8, the image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia is brought from the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Peñafrancia to the Metropolitan Cathedral and Parish of Saint John the Evangelist where a novena is held until the day of the feast.
On the last day of the feast, the image of the Virgin returns to its shrine via a fluvial procession traversing the Bicol River in downtown Naga.
While the original image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia remains in Naga City, the pilgrim image of the Virgin often visits other churches around the country to allow devotees to show their devotion without having to travel to Bicol. It is this image that is currently visiting Ateneo.
To welcome the pilgrim image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia to Ateneo, we will be hosting a Eucharistic Celebration for the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the Gesù Church on Friday, 8 September at 12:30 pm. This will be preceded by the praying of the Holy Rosary at 12:00 pm.
Fr Raymund Benedict ‘RB’ Hizon, SJ, Rector of the Church of the Gesù, will be the Presider for the mass.
Following the mass, the pilgrim image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia will remain at the Church of the Gesù until after the alumni mass on the third Sunday of September.
