IS faculty Toma Cayabyab is guest conductor for re-staging of "Rama, Hari"
13 Sep 2023
Toma Cayabyab of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies will perform as conductor of the Orchestra of the Filipino Youth in the latest production of RAMA, HARI in theaters this month of September 2023. This landmark dance musical returns to the stage to give today's audiences a rare opportunity to enjoy the combined artistry of five national artists who had a hand in producing this Ramayana-based performance when it premiered over four decades ago. This production uses the choreography of Alice Reyes (National Artist for Dance), the music of Ryan Cayabyab (National Artist for Music), lyrics and libretto of Bienvenido Lumbera (National Artist for Literature), with the translation of Rolando Tinio (National Artist for Theater and Literature), and stage design of Salvador "Badong" Bernal (National Artist for Theater Design).
Of course, The IS Department remembers fondly how Badong Bernal was one of our full-time permanent faculty members who taught with us until his passing in 2011. How wonderful to see his set designs come to life again!
RAMA, HARI will be performed by artists from the CCP's Professional Artist Support Program and Alice Reyes Dance Philippines, with music from the Ryan Cayabyab Singers and the Orchestra of the Filipino Youth under the baton of Toma Cayabyab as guest conductor. Toma Cayabyab teaches Rudiments of Music, Basic Music Research and Criticism, and Filipino Film and Society.
