The James Dyson Award, a prestigious international design accolade, serves as a celebration, an encouragement, and an inspiration to the next generation of design engineers. This illustrious award is open exclusively to current and recent design engineering students and is administered by the James Dyson Foundation. Its overarching mission is to ignite the passion for design engineering among young minds.
On 1 March 2023, the James Dyson Award opened its doors to aspiring engineers, providing them with the chance to carve a name for themselves and ignite their careers with a substantial cash prize and unparalleled media exposure. This annual competition is a coveted opportunity for young design engineers who possess the ability to develop tangible technologies that have the potential to profoundly impact lives. One of our startups courageously took on that challenge and entered the competition.
We take immense pride in congratulating Jeremy De Leon as the national winner of the James Dyson Award 2023 for his ingenious creation, the Make-roscope: Your First Keychain Microscope. Jeremy has been bestowed with a generous PHP 330,000 prize and has been crowned the national champion among 49 outstanding entries from the Philippines. Jeremy will now go on to represent the Philippines in the international round, where the ultimate victors will be handpicked by none other than Sir James Dyson himself. The shortlist of finalists will be unveiled on 18 Oct 2023, with the international winner set to be announced on 15 Nov 2023, receiving a staggering PHP 2,000,000 reward.
Jeremy, along with his startup Jeremake, is currently being incubated at the Ateneo Blue Nest of the Ateneo Intellectual Property Office. His mission is crystal clear: to provide an affordable and portable alternative to the existing market of costly and cumbersome microscopes. Here is a video of Jeremy showcasing the abilities of the Make-roscope. The Make-roscope envisions itself as an indispensable and accessible tool for elevating the standards of education and research in our country, thereby making quality science accessible to all.
