Commemoration of the 51st Anniversary of the Declaration of Martial Law
Theme: "Martial Law @51: Nasaan Ka, Atenista?"
Calendar of Commemoration Events
The Ateneo Martial Law Museum and Library, together with its partners, invites everyone to participate in the different events and activities for the commemoration of the 51st year since the declaration of Martial Law.
On September 21, 1972, former President Ferdinand E. Marcos, Sr. placed the entire country under a state of Martial Law. In the following years, the country was ruled by the Marcos Dictatorship and his cronies. Abuse of power, corruption, greed, and violence were commonplace. Human rights were curtailed, and the rule of law undermined.
People from all walks of life were affected by the oppression and brutality of the regime, including the Ateneo community. During this time, teachers, students and staff were subjected to arrests, harassment, monitoring, and some were even killed. Their sacrifices inspired all those after them to continue standing tall against authoritarian rule.
Fifty-one years later, we now ask ourselves: Nasaan na tayo?
Have we remained steadfast in upholding the principles of our democracy? Have we actively pursued the advocacies and causes of those who offered their lives for truth, justice, and freedom? How do we further deepen our commitment to be persons-for-and-with-others? In the coming days, let us revisit our past and be inspired once more by the sacrifice and heroism of those who came before us.
Please see the attached poster for the full list of events and activities.
