Ateneo to hold conference on climate action
The Coastal Cities at Risk in the Philippines: Investing in Climate and Disaster Resilience (CCARPH) project of the Ateneo de Manila University will conduct a Midterm Conference entitled, "Bridging Science-Policy-Practice Nexus Through Transdisciplinary Research and Climate Action" on Monday, November 11, 2019 at The Loft, 4/F Arete, Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada, the CCARPH is a flagship project launched in 2018 to help improve the competence of cities in Metro Manila, Iloilo City and Naga City to be able to withstand and quickly recover from disaster risks brought about by climate change. It is a transdisciplinary action research that promotes the capacity building of scientists and practitioners working on resilience, strengthens public-private partnerships for resilience, and informs the resilience plans of cities. The Office of the President of the Ateneo de Manila University is implementing the project under the leadership of Dr. Emma E. Porio (Professor, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, ADMU; Science Research Fellow, Manila Observatory) with co-Principal Investigators Ms. Ma. Antonia Yulo Loyzaga (President, National Resilience Council) and Ms. Jessica Dator-Bercilla (Senior Advocacy and Policy Officer, Asia and the Middle East, Christian Aid).

During the Midterm Conference, CCARPH scientists will showcase their transdisciplinary researches, particularly on air quality, climate projections, health, social vulnerability, systems dynamics / systems thinking, computable general equilibrium, deployment of disaster-related technologies, and visualizing risk, in support to the Resilient Local Government System, as well as for socially-enhanced climate and disaster risk assessment (CDRA), among others. Now in its midterm, the CCARPH project focuses on the mobilization and application of knowledge as well as the testing of technologies and tools recently generated so far.
An exhibit featuring the disaster resilient technologies of the Ateneo Innovation Center (AIC) as well as project milestones of CCARPH will also be in display during the conference. A gallery of posters of the capstone project of the Master in Disaster Risk and Resilience(MDRR) students will also be available.
The Midterm Conference will convene representatives and stakeholders from partner LGUs from Iloilo City, Naga City and Metro Manila; research partners from the Ateneo de Manila University, Manila Observatory, the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Naga University, and the University of the Philippines Visayas; the National Resilience Council; CSOs, NGOs and people’s organizations; and the Youth and Academe (Faculty and NSTP Students, as well as the ADMU-MDRR students).
