In celebration of International Women’s Day last March 8, the Lakambini Committee organized the talk, 'Palag: A talk on Women Empowerment and the Elimination of Violence against Women' featuring Sen. Risa Hontiveros. It was held at the Black Box Theater and was attended by students, faculty, and members of the university press.
True to its advocacy or promoting gender sensitivity in Ateneo Senior High School, Lakambini organized the event to shed light on issues such as sexual harassment, rape culture, and perpetuation of sexism and misogyny. Senator Hontiveros spoke about the Safe Spaces Bill that seeks to penalize acts of sexual harassment in the streets, workplace, school environment, and other public spaces. She also spoke of what can be done by students, school administrators, and faculty to address cases of gender-based discrimination and harassment. Afterwards, students were given an opportunity to ask Senator Hontiveros regarding her stance and opinion on relevant concerns. She stressed the importance of being aware of the issues that have been brought up and praised Lakambini for asking questions and raising concerns as a community. “I believe that the core advocacy of Lakambini is one of the most powerful that human beings could have for others," the Senator said. She also challenged the students, school officials and entire Ateneo community to do more about these issues.
